Ever wanted to record sound from your XBOX 360 on your PC? Or perhaps just wanted to have headphones for your 360 because you massive plasma screen TV doesn't have a damned headphone port for late night gaming when everybody else is asleep? Well I'm going to show you just how!
What you WILL need:
- VGA or component RGB cable for Xbox 360
- Dual-female to single male 3.5mm stereo jack.
Optional stuff:
- Dual-female to dual-female phono connector
- 1m (or so) of extra dual male to male phono cable to reach your computer
If you don't already have any of this, I've provided some links at the bottom to buy the parts for reputable companies.
Now that you've got all the parts, here's how we do it. Make sure your xbox 360 is turned off before starting.
First of all, take your lead coming from your Xbox 360. I'm using the Xbox 360 VGA lead but this will work the same with the component RGB cable - i've tested it. On the VGA lead, the sound cables are separated for you already as red and white male phono connectors. If you're using the RGB cable, take the red and white wires that are attached to the same part of the wire as the yellow (video) connector. These are the 3 wires that would typically connect to the SCART plug, just to make thing clear.
Now if your computer is very close by, and the cables will reach the back of your computer, connect the 2 phono cables to the dual-female to single male 3.5mm stero jack connector. It will be obvious which end they go in. Now plug the 3.5mm male stereo jack into your microphone slot (usually pink) on the back of your machine. F
It get's a tiny bit more complicated if your cables won't reach the back of your computer. This is where you'll need that extra length of dual-male to dual-male phono cable and the dual-female to dual-female connector. Take your length of cable and attach the 2 plugs to the connector. Now take your Xbox 360 cable and attach the 2 phono plugs to the other side of the connector. Next, slot the 2 phono's at the other end of the length of cable to your dual-female to single male 3.5mm stero jack connector - you can't go wrong with this bit, there's only 1 bit the cables can go in. Next, plug the stero jack end of your dual-female to single male 3.5mm stero jack connector to your microphone port on the back of your computer (usually the pink one).
Finally, plug your speakers, or headphones, into the outport (usually
green). You may have to change some settings on your computer to allow
the sounds from your microphone to be played through your out port.
Once you've configured your computers sound options (or not, depending
on whether or not it needs doing) turn on your Xbox 360 and wait for it
to load and play the sound. If you hear no sound, check your cables and
computer configuration. If you do - have fun gaming.
I promise I will update this post with photos of the setup as soon as I can get my camera working.
