Smoking: Death sold by man
Acute
myeloid leukemia. Cancers of the cervix, kidney, pancreas and stomach. Abdominal aortic aneurysm. Cataracts, periodontitis and pneumonia. These names
sound as if they were taken directly at random from some sort of dictionary of medical problems; but, in fact, they are related. They are all caused by the same thing: Smoking. The afore mentioned are not the only effects caused by smoking. One
may find that the risk of gaining more health problems such as strokes, low birthweight in infants (Obviously only applies to women), spontaneous
abortion (again, women only), negative effects on the development of cognition and behaviour,
exacerbation of cystic fibrosis and cervical cancer, heart disease, lung
cancer and nasal sinus cancer are all increased by inhaling the smoke of a nearby smoker on a regular basis. Passive smoking. Let us get to something
that is, not only is as horrifying as it sounds, but actually responsible for
fatal health hazards for those children whose parents are smokers. Sudden infant
death syndrome (SIDS). Asthma and middle ear infections in children, and various
other respiratory illnesses, are also said to be effects of secondary-smoking in
children. This should be enough to understand how much of a health hazard
smoking is for those non-smokers and smokers alike.
Now let
us consider another part of smoking, the finance. If you happen to
be a smoker, have you ever calculated how much money you spend on smokes? Let
me give you a rough idea. The averge smoker spends, approximately, US$50 on smokes every month!
That is equal to US$600 spent, annually, on cigarettes. Did you know that, per
capita, the income of a poor family in India is only US$562. That means that you
spend more money on cigarettes, than a poor family earns in India. This is
one of the reasons why the cigarette market has been estimated to be worth approximately
US$ 108.2 billion per year.
Let
us still ask ourselves: is there ANYTHING good about smoking? Smoking is the
most common addiction in the world. There have been instances where
children as young as 10 years old have been found to have been addicted to smoking
after stealing it from their fathers pockets! The results of this addiction in children was the higher risk of developing serious medical illness and the
shortening of their natural life by at least 14-20 years.
Thus
one can conclude that if you are a smoker, then it would be in the best
interests you, your family and the population of the world around you for you to quit. Your wallet woud thank you too.
